Shunts, Jumpers
Shunts and jumpers look simple on a BOM, but they cause more sourcing headaches than their unit price suggests. On the shunt side, you are usually dealing with current-sense resistors: low-ohm metal alloy parts, sometimes two-terminal, sometimes four-terminal Kelvin types, in packages like 1206, 2512, 3920, or bolt-down chassis formats for higher currents. Jumpers cover zero-ohm resistors and wire jumper links, the kind of part engineers specify without thinking twice until a line goes down because nobody stocked them. What buyers actually check here is tolerance and TCR on shunts, since a 1% part with a sloppy temperature coefficient will drift your current readings across the operating range. Power rating matters too, and datasheet ratings often assume ideal board conditions that your layout will not match. For jumpers, the checks are simpler but people still get caught on package size mismatches and current rating on zero-ohm parts, which is not infinite no matter what the schematic assumes. The trade-off on shunts is usually price against brand and traceability. A no-name 2512 alloy shunt might cost half what a Bourns or Isabellenhütte part does, and for a consumer gadget that may be fine. For anything measuring battery current or motor drive feedback, the cheap part is where measurement errors and field failures come from. Counterfeit risk is lower than on ICs but not zero, especially on popular part numbers during shortages, so lot codes and date codes are worth confirming. Packaging is another practical point. Cut tape works for prototypes, but if your CM runs tape-and-reel feeders, a partial reel in the wrong format slows the line down. If you have a part number in hand, check live stock and request a quote at icxing.com, and we will come back with pricing and lead time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose between a 1% and 0.5% tolerance current-sense shunt?
It depends on how accurate your current measurement needs to be across temperature, not just at 25 degrees. A 0.5% part usually also comes with a tighter TCR, which matters more in real operation than the room-temperature tolerance. If your ADC reference and firmware calibration can absorb error, 1% is often fine and noticeably cheaper.
Are zero-ohm jumper resistors really interchangeable between brands?
Electrically they are close, but not identical. Current rating varies by manufacturer and package size, and a 0603 jumper from one brand may be rated at 1A while another is rated at 2A. Check the datasheet rating against your actual trace current, especially on power rails rather than signal jumpers.
What lead time should I expect on metal alloy shunts in larger packages like 3920 or 5930?
These are lower-volume parts than chip resistors, so factory lead times of 8 to 16 weeks are common when there is no distributor stock. During shortage periods we have seen them stretch past 20 weeks. If your build is scheduled, it is worth securing stock early or qualifying a second source with the same resistance value and TCR.
