Film Capacitors

Film capacitors use a thin plastic film as the dielectric, which gives them better stability, lower losses, and longer life than electrolytics in most applications. The main sub-types you will see are polyester (PET), polypropylene (PP), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), and polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), each with different temperature ranges and cost points. Polypropylene is the usual choice for high-frequency or high-pulse work like snubbers and motor run circuits, while polyester covers general-purpose coupling and decoupling where size and price matter more than precision. These parts show up everywhere from power supplies and lighting ballasts to automotive electronics and industrial drives. When sourcing film capacitors, buyers typically check voltage rating, capacitance tolerance, and the dielectric material first, then look at lead spacing and package style to make sure it fits the board. Through-hole radial and axial packages are still common, but SMD film chips have taken over in higher-volume designs. One thing we see often is engineers specifying a tight tolerance like 5% or even 2% when the circuit would work fine with 10%, which can add cost and stretch lead times for no real benefit. Counterfeit risk is lower for film caps than for electrolytics or ICs, but it is not zero, especially on older or discontinued part numbers from brands like Vishay, KEMET, WIMA, and EPCOS. Lead times can swing from a few days to several months depending on the series and whether the manufacturer has stock on the shelf.
