Card Edge Connectors

Card edge connectors are the socket half of a board-to-board system where the PCB itself acts as the plug. Pads are etched right up to the board edge, that edge slides into a slotted housing, and spring contacts on one or both sides make the connection. The format has been around since early backplane systems, and it is still everywhere: PCI and PCIe slots on motherboards, memory module sockets, industrial backplanes, power distribution cards, test fixtures, and a long tail of legacy ISA and proprietary card slots that factories keep running decades past their supposed end of life. On the product side you will mostly be choosing by pitch (2.54 mm is the classic, 1.0 mm and 1.27 mm cover newer high-density designs), contact count, single or dual row, mounting style (through-hole solder tail, press-fit, or board-lock), and termination angle. What experienced buyers actually check before placing an order comes down to a few things. Plating is the big one: full 30 microinch gold over nickel on the contacts costs noticeably more than gold flash or selective plating, but it survives far more mating cycles, and for a slot that gets reseated often the cheap option stops being cheap pretty fast. The board side matters too, since the card edge needs a controlled bevel and hard gold fingers from your PCB fab, and a mismatch between connector tolerance and board thickness causes intermittent faults that are painful to debug. Second is availability. Plenty of card edge part numbers, especially legacy pitches from Amphenol, TE, EDAC, and Sullins, go on long factory lead times or get discontinued quietly, and that is exactly where counterfeit or remarked parts creep into the market. Packaging is a smaller issue here than with fine-pitch SMD parts, since these usually ship in trays or tubes rather than tape and reel, but confirm it if your line expects otherwise. Frequently Asked Questions

How much gold plating do I actually need on the contacts?

It depends on how often the card gets inserted and removed. Gold flash (under 5 microinches) is fine for a board that gets plugged once and stays put, but for anything reseated regularly, 30 microinches over nickel is the safe spec and what most datasheets rate their mating cycle claims against. Skimping here is a common cause of intermittent contact failures a year into the field.

The edge connector on our legacy design is discontinued. What are my options?

Old pitches like 2.54 mm ISA-style slots still show up through independent distribution even after the factory stops making them. The honest caveat is that aged stock carries counterfeit and oxidation risk, so ask for date codes, original packaging photos, and plating condition before buying. We can also check for current-production crosses from EDAC, Sullins, or TE that match your footprint.

Does my PCB need anything special to mate with a card edge connector?

Yes. The card edge needs hard gold plated fingers, a beveled leading edge, and board thickness held to the connector's tolerance, usually 1.57 mm plus or minus 10 percent. If your fab skips the bevel or uses ENIG instead of hard gold, insertion force goes up and wear accelerates. Send us the connector part number and we can confirm the board spec it expects.
