Attenuators

Attenuators are passive components that reduce signal power by a fixed or controlled amount, and they show up in almost every RF chain, audio path, and test setup you can think of. The category covers a wide spread: fixed RF attenuators in coaxial form (SMA, N-type, BNC), surface-mount chip attenuators for PCB layouts, digital step attenuators for gain control in receivers, voltage-controlled types, and simple resistive attenuation pads for audio or instrumentation. On the bench side, you also see rotary and programmable benchtop attenuators used heavily in lab and production test. When engineers and buyers source these parts, the first things on the checklist are usually attenuation range and step resolution, frequency range, power handling, VSWR, and flatness across band. Package matters a lot too. A 3 dB SMA inline attenuator and a 3 dB SMT chip attenuator solve the same math problem but live in completely different supply chains, and lead times between the two can differ by weeks. That is a real trade-off we see often: a buyer specced a connectorized part for a prototype, then discovers the production run needs the SMT version, and the approved vendor list has to be revisited. Counterfeit risk is worth mentioning here, especially for high-frequency parts from brands like Mini-Circuits, Pasternack, or API Technologies. Precision attenuators rely on tight resistive tolerances and plating quality, and remarked or recycled parts can pass a quick continuity check while failing badly at 6 GHz.
