RF Front End (LNA + PA)

RF front ends built around an LNA and PA sit between the antenna and the transceiver, and they decide how well a radio hears weak signals and how cleanly it talks back. In receive, a low noise amplifier adds gain while keeping its own noise figure down, often under 1 dB for GPS or 5G small cell work, while the power amplifier has to hit output power, linearity and efficiency targets without cooking the battery. Buyers usually compare gain, noise figure, P1dB, OIP3 or IP3, saturated output, current draw, package and the matching network the vendor assumed. Many parts here are front end modules that combine switches, filters and matching, which saves layout pain but locks you into one footprint. That trade off matters late in a build, when the PA is already on the metal core board and a respin is not funny anymore. Sub types include discrete LNAs, power amplifiers, driver amplifiers, gain blocks and full FEMs with T/R switching for Wi Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, LoRa, GNSS, cellular Cat M and private LTE radios. In purchasing, the questions get practical fast: is this the industrial temperature grade, is the date code fresh, is the reel sealed, and can we get the same EPC or lot code across the run. Price matters, but a cheap PA with a ten week lead time can cost more than a slightly pricier part in stock.
