RFID Reader Modules

Rfid Reader Modules are the embedded boards and assemblies that let a device detect and read RFID tags without the buyer having to design the RF front end from scratch. The category splits mainly by frequency: 125 kHz low-frequency modules for basic access cards, 13.56 MHz high-frequency units that handle MIFARE and ISO 14443 or 15693 tags, and UHF modules in the 860 to 960 MHz range for warehouse and logistics work where read distances of several meters matter. Interface options are usually UART, USB, RS232, or Wiegand, and that choice alone can narrow a shortlist quickly. These parts end up in door access panels, payment terminals, library and inventory systems, industrial equipment, and a lot of OEM hardware built around Arduino or STM32 platforms. When engineers and buyers source them, the questions are practical. What chip does the module actually use, because a board described as RC522-compatible may or may not contain a genuine NXP die. What is the real read range with the supplied antenna rather than the datasheet maximum. And what firmware version ships on it, since some older UHF modules have region-lock issues that only show up after deployment. On the commercial side, there is a real trade-off between the very cheap clone modules flooding the market and branded versions that cost more but come with consistent firmware and actual documentation. For production quantities, counterfeit or mislabeled chips are the bigger risk, so lot traceability matters more than saving a few cents per unit.
