Float, Level Sensors

Float level sensors are simple devices that do one job well: they tell you when liquid in a tank reaches a certain point. A float moves with the liquid surface and triggers a reed switch, hall sensor or mechanical contact. The result is a reliable on/off signal, or in continuous versions, a resistance output that tracks level across the full range. Most designs fall into a few familiar groups. Vertical stem sensors mount through the top or bottom of a tank. Horizontal side-mount types fit through the wall. Some use a single float for point detection, others use a multi-float stem for several switch points in one unit. You will also see miniature versions for coolant reservoirs and larger stainless models for fuel or chemical tanks. These parts show up in water treatment systems, HVAC condensate pans, hydraulic power packs, generator fuel tanks and medical equipment. The technology has not changed much in decades, which is part of the appeal. A basic polypropylene float switch costs very little and lasts for years in clean water. Stainless or PVDF versions handle harsher media but cost more, and that price gap is often where buyers pause. A cheaper plastic unit may work fine in theory, but if the tank holds diesel or acid, the float can swell or crack within months. When sourcing, most engineers check the float material, switch rating, thread size and whether the logic is normally open or normally closed. Lead time matters more than brand in many cases. A two-week wait for a specific stem length can stall an entire build, so buyers often accept an equivalent from a lesser-known maker if the specs match. That is where counterfeit risk creeps in. A float switch is easy to copy, and a substandard reed contact will fail early. Packaging also matters. OEMs usually want bulk bags, while maintenance teams prefer single boxed units with wiring diagrams.
